Carrying an electric scooter upstairs and storing it at home
If you live in a small apartment or regularly carry an electric scooter upstairs, compare the complete daily routine: the weight you can lift, the grip when folded, tight stair turns and your storage space. This guide uses PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra dimensions as a practical example and explains what to check before buying. It also covers car boots and operator-specific train conditions.
PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra at a glance: PHSCOO specifies a net weight of 13.5 kg including the battery and folded dimensions of 1035 × 145 × 365 mm (103.5 × 14.5 × 36.5 cm). These are manufacturer specifications, not the results of an independent carrying or vehicle-fit test.
Is PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra suitable for stairs and a small apartment? PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra is a folding electric scooter with a manufacturer-listed weight of 13.5 kg including the battery, folded dimensions of 103.5 × 14.5 × 36.5 cm, and front and rear suspension. These specifications make it a candidate to compare when your commute combines carrying and riding. Check your stair turns, available storage and ability to lift 13.5 kg before choosing; no scooter weight is comfortable for every rider.

1. Check weight, folded size and grip together
A kilogram figure does not tell you how a folded scooter balances in your hand. Before buying, consider your stair turns, the distance you will carry it and the bags you normally take with you. A trial with the actual scooter is more useful than assuming every model under 15 kg will feel easy.
- Net weight: 13.5 kg with battery, according to PHSCOO.
- Folded size: 103.5 cm long × 14.5 cm wide × 36.5 cm high.
- Unfolded size: 113.5 × 48 × 114 cm.
- Maximum load: 110 kg, including the rider and carried items.
- Packed weight: 16.8 kg; this is the shipping weight, not what you carry during a journey.
Confirm the exact configuration on the product page. Dimensions describe the scooter, not a guarantee that it will fit a particular car, locker or train.
2. Stairs: judge your complete daily routine
Count the flights you use in both directions. Check the tightest landing and whether you can keep a stable grip while leaving room for other people. Consider fatigue, wet steps and the bag you carry to work. If you are unsure about lifting 13.5 kg safely, arrange a handling demonstration or ask our team about the folded configuration before ordering.
A 13.5 kg scooter is 11.5 kg lighter than a 25 kg scooter. That is a direct weight comparison, not a measured reduction in effort. Balance, grip, stair geometry and your own strength still matter. Follow the product instructions for folding and locking before carrying.
3. Car boot and office storage: measure the opening first
For Butterfly Ultra, compare the folded 103.5 × 14.5 × 36.5 cm envelope with the boot opening, usable floor length and available height. Measure with the seats in the position you actually use, allowing room for your other luggage. Repeat the same check for a desk, cupboard or storage corner.
- Measure the narrowest opening, not just the space inside.
- Check whether the 103.5 cm length can pass through and turn into position.
- Leave clearance for your hands and any protective cover.
- Secure the scooter for transport so it cannot move around.
We do not claim that it fits every hatchback or saloon. A check in your specific vehicle remains the best confirmation.
4. Trains: check the exact service before you buy
Train rules are specific to the operator and service. Foldability alone does not guarantee acceptance. The examples below were checked on 29 September 2026; use the linked operator information again before travelling.
TGV INOUI: SNCF’s published passenger conditions state that scooters must be folded and, from 2 February 2026, placed in a labelled transport bag, within 90 × 130 × 50 cm. Non-folding scooters and models with a seat are excluded. The scooter and bag must be handled and stowed without obstructing other passengers. See the SNCF passenger conditions. Do not apply this rule automatically to OUIGO, TER, metro or international services.
DB long-distance services: DB’s detailed guidance allows a folded electric scooter as free hand luggage when securely stowed. Its battery must not be removed, charged or used as a power bank during transport. Consult DB’s e-scooter guidance for the service and any additional conditions.
Other operators: confirm folded dimensions, battery restrictions, cover requirements, storage areas and any reservation or supplement directly with the operator. Do not assume a rule from one country applies elsewhere. Switch off the scooter and walk through stations; keep doors, aisles and accessible spaces clear.
5. Lightweight does not answer the comfort question
Butterfly Ultra combines its specified 13.5 kg weight with front and rear suspension. The standard five-colour configuration uses a solid front tyre and a pneumatic rear tyre. Suspension, tyres, inflation pressure where applicable and road surface all affect ride feel. Suspension does not remove every bump, and we do not present this guide as a same-route ride test against competing scooters.
For your shortlist, compare weight and folded dimensions alongside tyre type, suspension, braking, local service and total purchase cost. Read the Butterfly Ultra and NIU KQi Air comparison or the PHSCOO and E-TWOW comparison.
6. Check your range requirement separately
Work out your return journey and leave a reserve for detours and changing conditions. PHSCOO publishes an ECO range test of up to 53 km with a 75 kg load on flat roads at 20 km/h. This is a stated test result, not a promise for every commute. Rider load, gradients, temperature and speed change the result. Read the published ECO range test rather than choosing on the headline alone.
7. A five-minute buying checklist
- Can you comfortably manage the scooter and your usual bag?
- Does the folded envelope fit your tightest opening and storage space?
- Does your exact transport service permit it, with its battery and cover?
- Does the scooter suit your route, rider load and required return range?
- Have you checked the current configuration, warranty and service arrangements?
Frequently asked questions
Is 13.5 kg suitable for an apartment without a lift?
It may be, but there is no universal comfortable carrying weight. Test the handling if possible and consider the number of flights, landings and your other luggage.
Will Butterfly Ultra fit in my car boot?
Use the folded 103.5 × 14.5 × 36.5 cm dimensions to check the opening and floor space. We cannot confirm a specific vehicle from its body style alone.
Can it go on every train?
No. Check the exact operator and service, including battery and bag requirements. The TGV INOUI and DB examples above have different conditions.
Should I choose a heavier scooter?
If you rarely carry it and have secure storage, compare heavier models on the riding features you need. If lifting is part of every journey, weight and folded handling deserve more attention.
Check your fit before ordering
