Can You Take an Electric Scooter on SNCB Trains in Belgium? The Battery Rule Explained

Short answer: SNCB-NMBS allows a folded scooter to travel free as accompanied luggage, without a special ticket — but its FAQ adds a specific condition for an electric scooter: the battery must be removed and the scooter switched off. Because that condition is decisive and some electric scooters (including the PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra) have an integrated, non-removable battery, you should not assume your scooter qualifies. This guide sets out the rule as SNCB publishes it and the checks to make before you travel.

Scope: this covers SNCB-NMBS domestic trains in Belgium, using pages current on 24 September 2026. International services (Eurostar, ICE and cross-border trains), buses, trams and metros have their own rules — check each operator. Rules can change; re-check close to your journey.

What SNCB says about scooters and luggage

SNCB's luggage page lists the items carried free of charge, including:

  • briefcases, rucksacks, suitcases, etc.
  • folding bicycles (to be folded before boarding), unicycles, scooters, etc.
  • children's pushchairs, wheelchairs, portable musical instruments and sports equipment

Two limits apply to free accompanied luggage:

  • Maximum 3 items per passenger, with a total weight of 30 kg.
  • Luggage must be placed in the spaces provided above and below your seat, and must not block corridors.

A non-folding (electric) bicycle, tandem, cart or Segway requires a paid Bike Supplement; folded scooters and folded bicycles do not.

The electric-scooter battery rule

SNCB FAQ, “Can I take a step on the train free of charge?”: “Your step accompanies you on the train free of charge, without a special ticket. Please note that in the case of an electric scooter, the battery must be removed and the scooter switched off.”

Two related conditions appear on SNCB's bicycle-ticket page:

  • Separate batteries for electric vehicles are prohibited on the train.
  • Charging on board is not permitted.

Read together, the published rule expects an electric scooter whose battery can be taken out — with the scooter switched off for the journey — while loose or spare batteries are themselves refused. If your scooter's battery cannot be removed, the rule as written does not appear to be satisfied.

Other rules that affect your trip

  • Stations and platforms: SNCB station regulations prohibit riding any means of transport inside stations and on platforms — walk alongside your folded scooter. Mobility aids for reduced-mobility passengers are the exception.
  • Replacement buses during engineering works: where trains are replaced by buses, only folded bicycles are accepted for space reasons — expect the same constraint for scooters and check the specific works notice.
  • International and high-speed trains: Eurostar and other cross-border services apply their own luggage dimensions and battery conditions; do not rely on the domestic SNCB rule for those journeys.

What this means for the PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra

We apply SNCB's published rule to our own product rather than glossing over it:

  • Folded size and weight fit the luggage profile: the Butterfly Ultra folds to about 1035 × 145 × 365 mm and weighs 13.5 kg, which a single passenger can place among luggage items within the 3-item / 30 kg allowance.
  • The battery condition is the blocker: the Butterfly Ultra uses a 48 V, 10 Ah integrated lithium battery that is not designed to be removed. It therefore cannot meet the FAQ's stated “battery must be removed” condition, and we cannot tell you that carriage is guaranteed or that staff must accept it.
Before you travel with a non-removable-battery scooter: ask SNCB customer service in writing (via the official contact form) whether an electric scooter with an integrated, switched-off battery is accepted under the luggage rule, and keep the reply with your ticket. Do not rely on forum answers or on what was accepted on a previous trip — conditions are applied by staff on the day.

Your pre-travel checklist

  1. Fold the scooter before boarding and switch it off.
  2. Count your items (max 3) and total weight (max 30 kg), including the scooter.
  3. If your scooter's battery is removable, remove it as SNCB describes — note that loose spare batteries are separately prohibited, so take only the fitted battery.
  4. If the battery is not removable, request written confirmation from SNCB before the journey.
  5. Walk the folded scooter through the station; never ride on platforms.
  6. If replacement buses are scheduled, confirm in advance whether folded scooters are carried.
