PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra vs NIU KQi Air: Which Lightweight Scooter Should You Buy?

⏱ 9 min read

Both the PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra and the NIU KQi Air target the same buyer: someone who wants a lightweight electric scooter for urban commuting. But they take very different approaches.

The NIU KQi Air uses carbon fibre to hit 11.9 kg — one of the lightest full-featured scooters on the market. The PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra uses aluminium and adds front and rear suspension. Both models have turn signals; compare current delivered prices for the selected configurations. Which approach is right for you depends on your commute and priorities.

NIU KQi Air: Advantages and Checks

1. It's lighter — 11.9 kg vs 13.5 kg

The carbon fibre frame saves 1.6 kg. If you carry the scooter up multiple flights of stairs daily, that difference adds up. The KQi Air is one of the lightest full-featured scooters available, and the carbon fibre frame also looks distinctive.

2. Battery warranty — compare the 24-month terms

NIU lists a two-year battery commercial warranty. PHSCOO Premium covers its battery and core components for 24 months without UGC; Standard base coverage for those parts is 12 months, with a 400-cycle limit for the Standard battery, whichever comes first. An approved Standard extension changes the eligible calendar end date but does not reset or increase the same battery's cumulative 400-cycle limit. PHSCOO capacity-based replacement also requires a confirmed manufacturing defect and laboratory retention below 70% for Standard base coverage, or below 60% for an approved Standard extension or Premium coverage. Natural ageing is excluded. Other component periods vary; equal headline months do not mean identical coverage.

3. Local service availability

Confirm whether a nearby NIU service provider accepts the KQi Air and the type of repair you need. PHSCOO has 7 service points in Austria, Belgium and France, arranged through support. An overall dealer count does not establish model-specific repair availability in your city.

4. Front disc and regenerative braking

The KQi Air combines a front disc brake with regenerative braking. The Butterfly Ultra combines front regenerative braking with a rear drum brake. Brake design alone does not establish a wet-weather stopping-distance winner; tyres, adjustment, surface and controlled testing also matter.

PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra: Features and Checks

1. Price — compare current delivered offers

The Butterfly Ultra Premium configuration has a €749 reference price. Compare this with the current NIU KQi Air offer for your country, including delivery, taxes, selected configuration and warranty terms. Promotions change; a historical discount or list price does not establish the current saving.

2. Dual suspension

This is the biggest practical difference. The Butterfly Ultra has front and rear suspension that absorbs cobblestones, tram tracks, and uneven pavements. The KQi Air has no suspension. Front and rear suspension may improve comfort on uneven surfaces, but tyres, rider load and setup also matter; try both on representative surfaces before judging comfort.

3. Full turn signals

The Butterfly Ultra has integrated front and rear turn signals plus a footboard ambient light for side visibility. The KQi Air also has integrated turn signals. Check signal visibility from different angles on either model. In city traffic, being visible from all directions matters — especially when changing lanes or turning at intersections.

4. 8.5in tyres with front airless option

The Butterfly Ultra uses a solid tyre on the front (motor) wheel as standard, eliminating the risk of a flat on the drive wheel. The KQi Air uses tubeless pneumatic tyres; check pressure and follow its repair guidance. Red & Black Butterfly Ultra models offer either both pneumatic tyres or front airless + rear pneumatic tyres as separate SKUs. Confirm the selected configuration.

5. Load capacity — 110 kg vs 120 kg

The Butterfly Ultra is rated for a maximum load of 110 kg; the KQi Air is rated for 120 kg. Count the rider and carried luggage together. NIU has the higher stated limit in this comparison; stay within the exact model's limit.

Commuting Considerations from Specifications

Scenario Butterfly Ultra NIU KQi Air
Smooth roads, daily train carry 13.5 kg — test carrying comfort Lighter — 11.9 kg
Cobblestones / tram tracks Dual suspension — try on your route No suspension; tyre size alone cannot predict comfort
Hilly route 500W rated — climbing depends on load and gradient 350W rated — compare route-specific climbing evidence
Wet weather braking Drum + regen — no matched wet-braking result Front disc + regen — no matched wet-braking result
Puncture risk Front air-loss flats avoided on the mixed-tyre SKU; rear remains pneumatic Both tyres pneumatic; pressure and maintenance matter
Budget under €800 €749 reference — confirm delivered Premium price Check current delivered offer
Need local service in small city 7 points in AT/BE/FR — arrange through support Confirm a local provider accepts KQi Air

Who Should Buy Which?

Choose the NIU KQi Air if:

  • Weight is your absolute top priority (you carry it up stairs daily)
  • You ride mostly on smooth roads or cycle paths
  • You prefer NIU's two-year battery terms after comparing the exclusions
  • You have confirmed a suitable local KQi Air service provider
  • The current offer fits your budget and you prefer carbon fibre

Choose the PHSCOO Butterfly Ultra if:

  • Its current delivered price and equipment match your priorities
  • Your commute includes cobblestones, tram tracks, or uneven roads (suspension matters)
  • You ride in city traffic and want full turn signals for safety
  • You prefer the SKU with a solid front tyre to avoid front air-loss flats
  • Your total rider-plus-luggage load is within 110 kg
  • You prefer Premium's 24-month battery/core coverage without UGC; optional Creator Rewards require approval and cannot extend any component beyond 24 months

Bottom Line

The NIU KQi Air is worth considering if lower carrying weight is your priority. The Butterfly Ultra combines dual suspension, turn signals and folding handlebars at 13.5 kg. Its range claim is up to 53 km, with published ECO results of 51.7–51.95 km. PHSCOO Premium includes 24-month battery/core coverage; other components have separate terms. Compare current delivered prices and confirmed local service before choosing.

Both are legitimate lightweight commuter scooters. The right choice depends on your route, budget, and how much you value suspension versus saving 1.6 kg.
